Rehs Contemporary is all set to unveil an exciting exhibition featuring the latest works by the acclaimed Japanese artist, Mitsuru Watanabe. The exhibition is set to open its doors on October 5th, 2023, from 4:30 to 8 PM. Everyone is invited to experience these remarkable pieces for the very first time.
Mitsuru Watanabe’s artistic vision has consistently captivated audiences, and his latest creations continue to break new ground in the world of contemporary art. Among the standout pieces is “Babel and Pudding,” a monumental painting standing over 5 feet tall. This work draws inspiration from Dutch Renaissance master Pieter Bruegel’s “Tower of Babel.” While paying homage to Bruegel’s intricate detail and storytelling, Watanabe adds his own unique twist. The towering structure in the background, reminiscent of the biblical tale, becomes a symbol of human ambition and folly. Watanabe’s meticulous brushwork and vibrant colours invite viewers to ponder human ambition, communication, and the intricacies of our interconnected world.

Another intriguing work is “Naoko Playing in Bosch’s Hell,” inspired by the nightmarish visions of Hieronymus Bosch’s “The Hell.” It immerses viewers in a surreal realm of vivid torment and bizarre creatures, creating a visual feast for the eyes. Watanabe’s masterful use of colour and texture allows viewers to explore the chaotic scene, revealing new layers of horror and oddity with each viewing.
One of the most iconic reinterpretations is “Rousseau’s Music of the Night,” inspired by Henri Rousseau’s “The Sleeping Gypsy.” Watanabe pays homage to Rousseau’s delicate atmosphere while infusing his own unique style. The tranquil desert landscape bathed in moonlight provides a stunning backdrop to a slumbering gypsy woman and her mysterious lion companion. In this rendition, the scene takes on a dream-like quality, with Watanabe’s daughter casually sitting atop the lion’s back and strumming the same mandolin that rests beside the gypsy woman. The repeated motif of the gypsy woman in the sky adds to the surrealism.
