Imagine walking through a shadowy forest, only to find yourself surrounded by full-sized dinosaurs—fighting, running, hunting, and teaching their young. This is Dino Lumina, the world’s first dinosaur park powered by 3D projection mapping, where science meets spectacle in the most immersive way yet.
Created by PaintScaping, the Los Angeles-based leader in 3D projection mapping, Dino Lumina transforms the Dallas Zoo into a prehistoric wonderland. Unlike animatronics, these dinosaurs are alive with motion—lifelike creatures brought to life with giant projections on invisible screens. This groundbreaking, limited-time experience is available only until Monday, January 6, 2025.
Cutting-Edge Tech Meets Dinosaur Magic
At the helm of this spectacular production is Philippe Bergeron, PaintScaping’s CEO and a trailblazer in CGI. Bergeron previously collaborated with Daniel Langlois, the mind behind SoftImage, the software responsible for the unforgettable dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.
“Daniel was instrumental in creating one of cinema’s most iconic moments—when the dinosaurs first appear on screen,” says Bergeron. “But no one’s ever seen them like this. The illusion of seeing them in real life? That’s a first.”
The experience is elevated by a spine-tingling 3D soundscape, designed by Academy Award-winning sound designer Sylvain Bellemare (Arrival). With Bellemare’s sonic magic, visitors are immersed in the ambient roars, wingbeats, and forest sounds of the Jurassic. Twelve high-powered Christie projectors bring this prehistoric drama to life with stunning realism.
“For years, the Dallas Zoo has partnered with PaintScaping to create unforgettable moments during our annual Zoo Lights event,” says Sean Greene, COO of the Dallas Zoo, the largest zoo in Texas. “Dino Lumina is our most ambitious project yet. We’re thrilled for guests to experience this unique combination of cutting-edge technology and storytelling.”
PaintScaping has a history of pushing the boundaries of projection mapping, delivering spectacular results on iconic landmarks and events. Some of their most memorable projects include:
North America’s largest mapping display for Britney Spears in Las Vegas.
The first-ever projection mapping on an operational rocket at Cape Canaveral.
Lighting up the legendary Hollywood Sign with their signature artistry.
Collaborations with the Bellagio Fountains, San Diego Zoo, University of Virginia’s bicentennial celebration, and Calvin Harris and Rihanna’s This Is What You Came For, with a staggering 2.8 billion views on YouTube.
Meet a Jurassic Legend
On Saturday, January 4, 2025, Steve “Spaz” Williams, the legendary animator behind the iconic T. rex in Jurassic Park, will join Philippe Bergeron at the Dallas Zoo for a special guest appearance. This is your chance to meet two of the visionaries behind the technology and artistry that shaped dinosaur storytelling.
Don’t Miss the Magic
Whether you’re a dinosaur enthusiast, a tech geek, or someone looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, Dino Lumina promises to be unforgettable. But hurry—this limited engagement wraps up on January 6, 2025, so step back in time while you still can.
