Interdisciplinary artist Dainius Trumpis combines sculpture, painting, installations, and ready-made objects in his work. His artistic explorations search through liminal states of reality and fragments of visual memory, which he reveals through cultural contexts and personal experience. The artist examines not only physical but also psychological reactions to forms and the properties of materials. By experimenting with ready-made elements, metal, and industrial materials, Trumpis imbues his works with new metaphysical meanings. His sculptures and installations surprise with unexpected, aesthetically sensitive solutions that draw the viewer into an authentic exhibition world.
In his solo exhibition Skin and Dust, Trumpis presents his latest works, which explore the transformation of the body and its ephemerality through material expression. For the artist, the creative process becomes an ongoing dialogue between himself and the material. He shapes sculptures and installations using the cyclical principle of growth and decay, reworking the pieces until they “determine” their final form. Here, the acts of creation and destruction merge, offering the viewer a direct reflection on sculpture and their own corporeality.
Trumpis’ works often bring associations with sports training equipment—incorporating materials such as metal, leather, and paraffin, which share the potential for growth and transformation. However, at the same time, traces of rust, welding seams, and cutting marks resemble scars—visual metaphors for the passage of time and decay. In his latest works, Trumpis moves away from ornamentation and boldly experiments with sculptural form. The mechanical, sometimes brutal, shaping process leads to a mutual transformation—not only of the artwork but also of the viewer.
