ArtPrize, the international art competition held annually in Grand Rapids, Michigan, returns from September 13–28, 2024. A highlight of this year’s event is Z-Car I, a futuristic prototype by the renowned architect and designer Zaha Hadid. Typically housed in the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University, Z-Car I will be displayed at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum during ArtPrize.
A Blend of Artistry and Innovation
Zaha Hadid, one of the most influential architects of her generation, designed the iconic MSU Broad Art Museum. The museum boasts the largest collection of works by her studio, Zaha Hadid Design, in North America. “The MSU Broad Art Museum’s collection of Zaha Hadid Design works enriches Michigan’s cultural landscape,” says Rachel Winter, Assistant Curator at the museum. “Sharing Z-Car I at ArtPrize is exciting, especially as it addresses modern questions of climate-friendly design.”
Z-Car I embodies Hadid’s signature blend of striking visuals and user-centric design. This emission-free, three-wheel car features a lightweight carbon fibre composite body, seating for two, and a unique hinged rear suspension for optimal city navigation and aerodynamics at higher speeds.
ArtPrize Expands into the Design Space
Though not an official ArtPrize entry, Z-Car I will captivate visitors alongside the competition’s exhibits at the Ford Museum. It also highlights a new ArtPrize 2024 category: +Design. This category includes entries that aim to impact daily life through purposeful design, with works eligible for public and juried awards.
ArtPrize 2024 promises to blend art and innovation, with Z-Car I as a standout attraction for all attendees.
