In April, Jim Dine, the renowned American painter, sculptor, and poet, will transform the Palazzo Rocca Contarini Corfù at the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, themed “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere,” with a comprehensive exhibition curated by Gerhard Steidl, the Founding Director of Kunsthaus Göttingen.
Titled “Jim Dine – Dog on the Forge,” the showcase will unveil 32 innovative, site-specific works specially crafted for the Biennale. Alongside these new pieces, previously unseen paintings and sculptures will be presented alongside artworks spanning from the 1980s to the present day. Steidl’s curation draws from Dine’s extensive travels between the United States and Europe and his lifelong commitment to visual, cultural, and linguistic amalgamation.
Set within a 14th-century palazzo overlooking the Grand Canal, the exhibition juxtaposes ancient and contemporary elements, mirroring Dine’s personal journey. The reinterpretation of Dine’s iconic motifs—tools, hearts, self-portraits, Venuses, and Pinocchios—will be showcased on two floors of the palazzo and within an 18th-century sculpture garden. Designed as a poetic voyage, the exhibition highlights the intricacies of Dine’s intimate body of work, deeply influenced by European art history and his ongoing exploration of language and self.
