The Frist Art Museum presents “Lee Alexander McQueen & Ann Ray: Rendez-Vous,” a captivating display of garments and photographs that explore the creative bond between the late British fashion icon Alexander McQueen and French photographer Ann Ray. Curated by Barrett Barrera Projects, this exhibition will grace the Frist’s Ingram Gallery from May 30 to August 25, 2024.
McQueen, renowned for his revolutionary fusion of craftsmanship and narrative, is vividly portrayed through Ray’s lens in this intimate showcase of his life and artistry. Ray’s 13-year photographic journey offers a rare glimpse into McQueen’s world, capturing both serene studio moments and the frenetic energy of backstage runway scenes.
Featuring 60 carefully curated dress objects spanning McQueen’s illustrious career and 65 select photographs from Ray’s extensive archive, the exhibition offers a curated glimpse into the duo’s creative synergy. With 10 garments gifted by McQueen to Ray and 13 exclusive pieces sourced from Barrett Barrera Projects, visitors are treated to a curated exploration of McQueen’s enduring legacy.
Structured into five sections of McQueen’s iconic garments complemented by 12 thematic groupings of Ray’s evocative photography, the exhibition traces McQueen’s evolution from his early Central Saint Martins days to his revolutionary tenure at Givenchy and beyond.
Through McQueen’s transformative designs and Ray’s emotive imagery, viewers are immersed in the highs and lows of McQueen’s journey, from his early struggles to his triumphant runway spectacles. Despite personal setbacks, McQueen’s creative spirit remained undimmed, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate.
