Talking about haute couture Karl Lagerfeld mentioned, “there is something mythical about it that cannot be improvised”, and this is exactly what the Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli did for Spring couture 2014.
Inspired by fifty-five operas they created the same number of garments that all represent timeless protagonists of the great masterpieces. Using transparent fabrics like silk or tulle designers made models look like flowing creatures we have seen on the stage while a theatrical approach to the runway strengthened this feeling. Dominating earthly colors went surprisingly well with images of various animals such as gorilla, snake, lion or tiger. This unexpected turn could have easily become a disaster but Chiuri and Piccioli managed to balance between the couture elegance and a swing of imagination. It almost seems that these images of animals unleashed the wild spirit of every character. Unfortunately, in some outfits the connection to a certain character was almost negligible but gracefully draped garments were no disappointment.
Most of the long dresses looked very modest from the front but backless back made them intriguing and sexy. Feminine and detailed collection charmed the audience and took them to a journey through Western music culture.
