The Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY), a hub of the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, proudly presents “Whanki in New York,” an exclusive exhibition running from May 2 to June 13, 2024. This exhibit commemorates the groundbreaking work of abstract artist Kim Whanki (1913-1974) during his influential time in New York, celebrating his enduring impact on contemporary art five decades after his passing.

“Whanki in New York” is a groundbreaking event that not only features 27 original artworks on loan from the Whanki Museum in Seoul but also unveils private collections from New York associates of Kim and his wife for the first time. Additionally, LG Electronics showcases five digital artworks that reimagine Kim’s creative vision using cutting-edge technology, crafted by emerging media artists utilizing LG OLED screens.

Michael Cheonsoo Kim, Executive Director of KCCNY, expresses excitement about collaborating with the Whanki Museum and LG Electronics to bring Kim Whanki’s significant works to New York. “Since our founding in 1979, we’ve been committed to promoting Korean culture and art in New York,” he says. “This exhibition not only celebrates Kim’s critical New York era but also includes rare personal artefacts contributed by the Korean American community. Our event shines a fresh light on his legacy, fostering cultural connections across generations.”

Kim’s artistic journey is explored in depth, from his early days in Tokyo during the 1930s to his pivotal years in Seoul’s art scene and his time in Paris, culminating in his transformative period in New York from 1963 to 1974. The exhibition showcases not only his artworks but also personal items such as diaries, photographs, and letters, offering insight into his creative process.

This retrospective serves as a powerful reminder of Kim’s status as a trailblazer of Korean abstract art, reconnecting audiences with his legacy 50 years after his final days in New York. Viewers are encouraged to approach his works with fresh perspectives, reflecting on the enduring resonance of his artistic spirit and the timeless nature of his creations.
