On the 7th of December at 6 p.m., the opening of Mateusz Choróbski’s solo exhibition “For Whose Good” will be held at the Gallery (AV17).
Mateusz Choróbski is a sculptor, installation, and performance artist who addresses sensitive social issues. The artist analyses problems related to the economy, conceptually approaching the emotional states they evoke. By transforming everyday objects and giving them new purposes, Choróbski seeks connections between the former and new contexts. He focuses on the exhibition space, manipulating light to alter the visual understanding of the place. The exhibitions often blur the boundary between the work and the viewer, drawing them into the created reality.

In the solo exhibition “For Whose Good”, Mateusz Choróbski presents his latest installations and sculptures, rethinking poverty and the associated emotions. This universal and eternal problem, typically presented only as a statistic, is perceived by many as an obscured daily reality. The author explores connections between Lithuania and Poland, focuses on one of the most hidden aspects – the poverty line in both countries. Cicero’s phrase “Cui bono?,” often used in forensic science to judge suspects according to the benefits of a crime, becomes a critique of the socio-economic situations in both countries. Using familiar objects and materials, such as welded coins and light installations, the exhibition analyzes the situation of people living below the poverty line in terms of who can benefit and how. The light objects exhibited in the gallery spaces change the atmosphere, revealing the feelings of exclusion, instability, and fear associated with deprivation experienced by many people in society. Mateusz Choróbski’s exhibition “For Whose Good” does not leave the viewer as indifferent but rather encourages them to rethink the statistics defining poverty and their meaning.

Mateusz Choróbski (b. 1987, Radomsko) graduated in photography from the University of Arts in Poznań and obtained a master’s degree in Media Art from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. The artist has participated in 12 solo and more than 30 group exhibitions. His work has been presented in Poland, Estonia, Italy, Spain, Germany, Japan, and elsewhere. Mateusz Choróbski’s works are included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. The artist is represented by Secci Gallery in Italy.
