On the 14, 15, 16 and 17 June, Sónar Barcelona will celebrate its 24th edition in Barcelona, and later this year it will continue the Latin America leg of its international tour in Buenos Aires, Bogotá and Santiago de Chile.
1st edition Sónar Hong Kong
Sónar Hong Kong successfully held its first festival on Saturday, 1 April, with 5,000 people attending. The festival was spread across 6 stages at the Hong Kong Science Park and offered more than 30 live shows and outdoor dj sets, indoor performances and immersive audiovisual shows.
Sónar Hong Kong’s musical program included live concerts and dj sets ranging from dance music to experimental electronica. A combination of established artists such as DJ Shadow, Gilles Peterson and Dave Clarke, emerging talent like Lady Leshurr, Kingdom and Evian Christ, alongside Chinese artists including Fragrant Harbor & Ouissam, Ocean Lam and Choi Sai Ho.
Asia’s first edition of Sónar+D took place at the singular Charles K. Kao Auditorium building at the Hong Kong Science Park. The program included forward-thinking workshops, talks and interactive activities designed to explore the relationship between creativity, technology, innovation and business. The Dirty Electronics workshop and audiovisual performance presented their latest collection of art modular synths, Polytik.
1st edition Sónar Istanbul
The 24 and 25 March also marked the inaugural Sónar Istanbul, with 9,000 people attending. The festival was held across 4 stages at the Zorlu Performing Arts Centre, a venue renowned for having some of the best acoustics in the world.
Sónar Istanbul featured performances by Moderat, the project from Modeselektor and Apparat; global techno ambassador Nina Kraviz; Floating Points, Kode9, Prins Thomas, Clark, Nosaj Thing, Matias Aguayo, HONNE, HVOB and Cola & Jimmu.
Sónar+D Istanbul conference dedicated to creative technologies, included an extensive program of more than 30 activities, with workshops, talks, interactive VR experiences and new media art installations. Among this year highlights: outstanding composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda bringing his minimalist aesthetics to Sónar+D Istambul with live audiovisual show Supercodex, visual artist Ali M. Demirel presenting The Pier, a film on abandoned architectural structures featuring an original soundtrack by Biosphere.
5th edition Sónar Reykjavík
On the 16, 17 and 18 February the 5th Sónar Reykjavík was successfully staged to vast public acclaim, repeating the successes of previous editions with a recurring attendance of 11,000 people at Harpa auditorium. There were 4 stages: SonarClub, SonarHall, SonarComplex – in the auditorium – and SonarLab.
The program included more than 60 performances from exceptional artists like Fatboy Slim, Moderat, who presented their latest work; hip-hop legends De La Soul; award-winning British rap and grime artist Giggs; Berlin producer Blawan, who teamed up with Iceland’s Exos –for a two-hour set-; and Ben Klock, Forest Swords, Helena Hauff and Sleigh Bells, among many others.
