Polished metal floor, one line to walk forward and back, only two rows of seats and no photographers. That is how the great return of John Galliano, first time as a creative director for Maison Martin Margiela, happened. After Dior eliminated him from business in 2011 because of making anti-Semitic comments in Paris, lots of fashion lovers were silently hoping for him to come back. Among the special, hand-picked 150 witnesses of this meaningful event you could see faces of Anna Wintour, Manolo Blahnik, Jasper Conran and Kate Moss. Margiela is known for the deconstructiveness as well as minimalism, that is why there were some doubts about this liaison with the extravagant Galliano. However, he proved his mastery by creating couture collection which complies with previous Margiela print, but brings in the fresh scent of creative ideas covered in romantic embroideries. Different fabrics, from velvet to tulle put together, created the most interesting garments and even the simple red dresses were made with a touch of artistry. At the end of the show Galliano took a tiny bow in his white atelier coat. This was a glorious return of a genius designer, who managed to merge his extraordinary style with Margiela’s minimalistic one.
