Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) has unveiled the Plain Language Big Book: A Tool for Reading Alcoholics Anonymous—a groundbreaking new edition of its iconic recovery text designed to make the Twelve Step program more accessible for everyone. Originally published in 1939, the “Big Book” has been a lifeline for millions, offering a roadmap to recovery from alcoholism. However, its dated language has posed challenges for some readers, prompting this much-anticipated update.

The Plain Language Big Book retains the heart and soul of the original text—its core principles, spiritual guidance, and timeless wisdom—but reimagines them in clear, contemporary language. This modernized version aims to bridge the gap for individuals who may struggle with the original’s formal tone, whether due to reading challenges, language barriers, or limited access to experienced A.A. members who can help interpret its teachings.

This initiative was born out of feedback from A.A. members across the globe, who voiced the need for a more inclusive version of the Big Book to ensure its life-changing message could reach as many people as possible. A.A. members and publishing professionals worked collaboratively to craft this edition, preserving the program’s integrity while making it easier to understand and apply.

The release of the Plain Language Big Book was greenlit by a vote during A.A.’s 2024 General Service Conference, reflecting the Fellowship’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. A.A. encourages members and groups to purchase the new edition through local A.A. groups, Intergroups, and Central Offices to support Twelfth Step work—the organization’s mission to help those still suffering from alcoholism.

Since its founding in 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous has transformed countless lives by offering a program of recovery rooted in mutual support, community, and the power of the Twelve Steps. With the release of the Plain Language Big Book, A.A. reaffirms its dedication to meeting people where they are—ensuring that anyone who seeks help with a drinking problem can access the tools they need to recover.
